Dassu

Dassu is a small hamlet in the Braldu Valley, part of Shigar District in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, approximately 50-60 km from Skardu, a major town in the region. This area lies within the Karakoram mountain range, known for its towering peaks and glaciers, making it a gateway to adventure and exploration. Nearby, the historical Shigar Fort and various trekking routes to high mountain peaks add to its allure for visitors.

Dassu is renowned for its gemstone deposits, particularly beryls (including aquamarine, goshenite, and morganite), topaz, tourmaline, garnets, apatite, and fluorite. These minerals are found in complex granitic pegmatites, which are prized for their beautiful, well-formed crystals, attracting mineral enthusiasts worldwide.

Mining in Dassu has a history dating back several decades, primarily involving local communities in small-scale, traditional methods. The Gemstone Corporation of Pakistan has previously worked in the area, but much of the current mining is done by local miners using basic techniques. The local culture is predominantly Balti, with Tibetan and Islamic influences, known for hospitality and traditions. Local specialties include fruits like apricots, cherries, apples, and grapes, enhancing the region’s charm.

The climate in Dassu is cold and dry, typical of high-altitude regions, with temperatures ranging from -20°C in winter to 20°C in summer, at elevations between 2,500 and 3,500 meters. The ecology features sparse vegetation and unique flora and fauna adapted to the harsh conditions, adding to the area’s ecological interest.
