Kolársky vrch deposit

Kolársky vrch deposit sits in Pezinok, Pezinok District, Bratislava Region, Slovakia, a town roughly 20 km northeast of Bratislava, the capital, and near the scenic Little Carpathians. The deposit is 3.8 km northwest of Pezinok, making it accessible for enthusiasts. Nearby, Bratislava offers urban exploration, and Modra is known for cultural significance, enhancing the region’s appeal for mineral hunters.

This locality is renowned for antimony, primarily stibnite (Sb₂S₃), mined historically. It’s especially famous for kermesite (Sb₂S₂O), with striking red, needle-like crystals prized by collectors. Other minerals, like gold, are present but likely in small amounts, adding an unexpected layer of interest for those seeking rare finds.

The deposit is a hydrothermal antimony vein, hosted in Late Silurian to Lower Carboniferous phyllites and black slates. These metamorphic rocks, altered by heat and pressure, provided the perfect setting for hot fluids to deposit antimony minerals, creating a geologically rich site for study.

Mining began in 1790 on a small scale and ceased in 1991 due to economic reasons, with the site yielding world-class kermesite specimens. This long history reflects its importance in Slovakia’s mining past, offering a glimpse into the region’s industrial heritage.
